As a city bicyclist, I tend to bike periodically in the City, but when there's down time or a chance to bike outside of the City, I head up north to Sausalito. I'm not a hard core bicyclist but when it comes to getting some exercise, be out in nature, and avoid crowds, than a bike out to Sausalito can be fun and relaxing.
I took the time to head out mid week, one to avoid people on the Golden Gate bridge, and two, just less populated places to bike. I left downtown San Francisco around 930 am and made my way along Golden Gate bridge. I say it's about less than 2 miles across to get to Sausalito. The views on the bridge is magnificent, you have the view of the open Pacific Ocean one one side and in the bay, you can see Alcatraz Island.
As I biked my way down to Sausalito, I was a bit careful going down as bicyclists have to share the same path as motorists. Sometimes, they are not as mindful being around bicyclists even though we have our own lane or not impeding their drive. Sometimes, I feel drivers don't know how to co-exist with bicyclists on the road. Maybe a bad analogy would be is if it's pouring rain on the roads, drivers tend to freak out by driving super slow or just driving with no regard. Just my thought.
Heading in to Sausalito is like another world. It's less populated, a small town feel, relaxing. I could tell my heart rate goes down when I'm biking along the bay front. I managed to find a place to order food and have it on the waterfront for lunch, rent free. No restaurant dining needed. Just me and my bike with a quick bite and a drink.
By end of day, say around 3pm, I was back in the City and realized I did full circle exploring Sausalito and City. I should do this more often, not always that path but one that is manageable for a day trip and to explore being on a bike where otherwise you wouldn't see driving.
I may have a friend join me on the next "bike tour". Pedal Here, Pedal There!
